Getting food support

Are you the same organisation as Okehampton Community Food Bank?

No. The Okehampton Food Bank is a separate, independent charity based at the Ockment Centre, North Street, Okehampton. Our registered charity number is 1212284. Please use the contact details and referral information on this website to reach our team.

Do I need a referral to use the food bank?

Yes. We operate a referral-only service. Organisations such as Citizens Advice and Community Links can discuss your circumstances and refer you to us. If you are unsure where to start, please contact our team and we will explain how to access support.

Does the food cost anything?

No. All food and essential items we provide are free of charge. You do not need to pay or make a donation to receive support.

Where and when can I collect my food?

Food collections take place on Thursdays between 9:30am and 12:30pm in the Garden Room at the Ockment Centre, North Street, Okehampton. Please make sure your referral has been arranged before attending.

Can I choose the food I receive?

Yes. We offer a choice of available food so you can select items that suit your household. Please tell our team about any allergies or dietary requirements so we can discuss suitable options with you.

Do you provide toiletries and household essentials?

Yes. Alongside food, we provide toiletries, hygiene products and household essentials, subject to availability. Please ask our team about the items your household needs.

Volunteering with us

How can I apply to volunteer?

You can apply using our online volunteer application form. Tell us a little about yourself, your interests and your availability. Our team will then contact you to discuss opportunities and the next steps.

You do not need previous food bank experience. We welcome people with a range of skills and backgrounds. We will discuss what each role involves and explain the support and training available.

Will I need a DBS check?

A DBS check may be required for some volunteering roles, depending on the duties involved. We will explain any checks needed as part of the application process.

Donating and supporting us

A DBS check may be required for some volunteering roles, depending on the duties involved. We will explain any checks needed as part of the application process.

What items do you currently need?

Our needs change as stock levels vary. Please check the current donation needs list on our What we need page before shopping. It shows which items are urgently needed, currently needed or well stocked.

Can I donate money instead of food?

Yes. Financial donations help us buy food and essential items when stocks run low. Visit our Donate page for details of how to give.

Can my school, church or workplace organise a collection?

Yes. We welcome collections organised by schools, churches, workplaces and community groups. Please contact our team beforehand so we can explain which items are most needed and agree arrangements for receiving your donation.
